He - rightly - regards James, who is gay and Catholic, as one of the most significant theological writers in England. JA takes an interpretative approach which goes much further than an archbishop bound to a certain kind of understanding of church unity can, of course. I think this says a lot about the disjuncture between RW's heart and his office.

As a footnote, if RW was prepared to challenge the Akinolites on the same use-of-scripture ground that he challenges Candian liberals, the sexuality 'debate' would be transformed. I have enormous affection for him, but that is where his greatest culpability lies IMO.Simon Barrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05366440538616508935noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21346696.post-51565611045999830342007-04-19T20:29:00.000-04:002007-04-19T20:29:00.000-04:00(And also: people quite often don't remember what...(And also: people quite often don't remember what the lectionary reading said yesterday. I know I don't; and it takes me a couple of minutes to get into the flow of the reading, anyway.

If they're listening to it, people tune out from time to time. (If they're reading, they can go back and read it anyway, so what's the diff?)

Further, the anti-homosexuality proof-text (Romans 1:26-27) we've heard over and over again starts this way: "For this reason God gave them up...." We always have to remind people that this is an explanation of something else - that they've left out the "reason."

And of course, this happens a lot in lectionary readings, too - the passages often start up from apparently nothing. We don't get a recap of what happened the day before, after all.

I get your point about leaving things out of the readings. But is there really any point in including a verse that's continually used to beat people over the head - particularly when everybody in the world has heard it time and time again? This verse is what we're talking about in public, in fact! Can't we possibly wait a few years until the terror subsides a bit to read it in the letionary?)blshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07627725321531151309noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21346696.post-33241205233682828202007-04-19T20:13:00.000-04:002007-04-19T20:13:00.000-04:00I don't know about anybody else here, but personal...I don't know about anybody else here, but personally, I've heard Romans 1:26-27 approximately 55,372 times in my life. Perhaps they left it out due to overexposure....blshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07627725321531151309noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21346696.post-66304557273781779892007-04-19T14:59:00.000-04:002007-04-19T14:59:00.000-04:00I posted on this at my site...I posted on this at my site...Derek the Ænglicanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11625110461660458291noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21346696.post-37753563857680255672007-04-18T09:01:00.000-04:002007-04-18T09:01:00.000-04:00hmmm...The idea of examining the theology of the B...hmmm...The idea of examining the theology of the BCP through lectionary analysis is intriguing, potentially tedious, but more then likely illuminating. Back in the late sixties one of my spiritual advisors suggested that I use the British daily office lectionary because, unlike the American one, at that time it didn't skip bits of scripture, but plowed straight on through -- this led to my first encounter with the dismembered concubine -- horrified, I went to the 1928 Prayer Book lectionary to see if the passage appeared anywhere there -- NOT. So there's one answer to "what do we do with texts of terror?" Ignore them! (NOT)
Someone might do an analysis of the theology of the Episcopal Church based on its lectionary omissions....Juleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08290600582981220671noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21346696.post-476834271286803122007-04-17T13:52:00.000-04:002007-04-17T13:52:00.000-04:00I have wondered why the daily office lectionary do...I have wondered why the daily office lectionary doesn't just go straight through consecutively without skipping?

And as a preacher I think often about the gaps in the Sunday lectionary...why omit this and include that? How does that change our perceptions of what we are hearing? I can (and do) pick missing pieces when I preach but that begs the question of what happens to the pew sitter whose only (or primary) exposure to scripture is the lectionary.Rev Dr Momhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11607665272056430039noreply@blogger.com
